These were the 2nd class sitting cars for the original Spirit of Progress. Further building after the SOP started running saw the class grow to 14. In 1962 8 BS's were transferred to Standard Gauge for the start of the SG Spirit Of Progress. The rest of the class remained on Broad Gauge providing economy class air conditioned service on longer distance trains.
Over the years several BS's were converted to mini buffet cars. In 1966 BS's 2 & 3 were converted to MBS's 1 & 2 respectively. In 1977 BS 1 became MRS 2 and BS 4 became MRS1. *BS numbers increased after 1983, concurrant with the introduction of the N cars, most remaining AS cars were recoded to BS. |

The arrival of the N cars saw most of the remaining AS's recoded to BS.
